Charles Dana's Chickamauga-Chattanooga Telegrams

Dana didn't have anything to do with Grant's choice of Thomas over Rosecrans.

And if Rosey had "no Retreat in him," how would you explain his ride back to Chattanooga on Sept 20th?

Rosecrans was the Head of the Army. He didn't know the disposition of Thomas At that time. He instructed all under a specific rank to stop at Roseville Gap. He immediately gave orders for the reforming of the Army. He had Telegraph at Chattanooga. He had a message from Grant waiting on him. Chattanooga was the obvious place for that to take place. Optics of it was terrible. However he did nothing wrong in going to Chattanooga.

He had NO impulse to give up Chattanooga. He gave up Lookout Mtn. Didn't want to stretch his forces. Knew that in time, he could get it back. Lookout Mtn had nothing to do with the defense of Chattanooga.

Dana had much to do with getting Rosecrans relieved. He ****** himself at Chickamauga. He witnessed the breakthrough. Got separated from Rosecrans. Ended up at the Widow Glenn's and ordered. Wilder to escort him to Chattanooga. Wilder knew Dana didn't have that Authority. Wilder gave him an escort. Dana's first telegram was the, Its worse than Bull Run assessment. So, Dana had a lot to do with getting Rosecrans Cashiered.

Grant had his own reasons. I expressed some of those. Dana gave him political cover to do it.

Stanton gave Grant the choice of who he wanted as a subordinate. Grant made his choice, and it had nothing to do with Dana, and nothing to do with politics.

I don't know what "message from Grant" could have been waiting in Chattanooga during the Chickamauga battle. Rosecrans actions speak for themselves that day.

Probably a Lot, you don't know? Thanks for sharing.
