Pre-War Profession Midshipman, resigned 1850, newspaper publisher, lawyer, assistant clerk in US House of Representatives.
War Service October 1861 resigned from Congress, Maj. of 3rd Indiana Cavalry, Lt. Col., Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, March 1863 Col., Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, commanded 2nd Bde/3rd Cavalry Divn in the Petersburg campaign, July 1864 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Divn/Cavalry Corps in the Shenandoah Valley.
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V. March 13 1865.
Post War Career Judge, politician.
