Col., Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, March 1863 Col., Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, commanded 2nd Bde/3rd Cavalry Divn in the Petersburg campaign, July 1864 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Divn/Cavalry Corps in the Shenandoah Valley.
