There was a proposal for a statue for Joshua Chamberlain to be placed on a boulder as described below. Anyone have a photo of the rock?

"I enclose a letter from Col. Nicholson concerning the position of the Chamberlain Memorial at Gettysburg. You are the one most familiar with the place and so the best fitted to make the selection. I send the plan. I take it that the position deemed the best by the Commission is the boulder 1.0 feet in diameter and 3 feet high, just opposite the L.F. of the 20th Maine, where from the curve in the avenue a memorial would be seen in front and on either side."

I believe this is the rock in question.

Seems like a good rock to place a statue but the description reads "1.0 feet in diameter and 3 feet high." That rock isn't 1.0 feet in diameter. Anyone think the description might be incorrect? A rock 1.0 feet in diameter and 3 feet high is almost like a pedestal.

The description of this rock comes from the Sept. 22, 2022 issue of "Preservation & Progress," a magazine of the Friends of Gettysburg. That article seems to be the same/similar to this article: https://npsgnmp.wordpress.com/2014/...le-round-top-and-the-memorial-that-never-was/
I wonder if "1.0 feet in diameter and 3 feet high." is a transcription error and should read " "10 feet in diameter and 3 feet high." If so, then that would more closely match the photo that mwalker6043 posted. I would think that this "Chamberlain rock" would be well known by others on this forum. Anyone else know anything about this?

OK. Think that this is a transcription error. Another source claims "10 feet in diameter."

Definitely not a 1 foot diameter. You can't place a statute on a rock that small.

As I understand it, the rule established by the GBMA was that only statues of Generals were allowed on the battlefield. That is why the 83rd Pa monument which is obviously crowned with a statue of Colonel Strong Vincient, yet he is not recognized on the monument.
