Card Numbers?

Hello to everyone! This is my first post! I hope it goes well, ha! Anyways, my question is, on the Civil War Service Records, usually on the first page listed with the persons name, regiment, etc., is place where "card numbers" can be written. Some people have lots of lines of numbers and some have very few. What ARE these card numbers? Do they mean anything significant? Thank you so much!!!

From my understanding that lists the number of individual cards in their compiled service records. They generally are in two-month intervals and may list information such as present or absent, sick, wounded or killed, or on detached duty. May also mention when they were last paid or if court martialed.

@huskerblitz is correct; those are the numbers of the individual cards that should be in the folder. The first "page" of the CSR is cover of the packet. More numbers simply indicates more cards or other items filed in the packet, that typically reflects longer service (i.e., appearance on more bimonthly muster rolls) or additional items, such as medical or PoW records. But the numbers themselves don't have any particular significance.
