Wondering the same thing. His weight plus gear would be very taxing on a mount, Plus his height would make his feet almost touch the ground while mounted. Not too many 18+ hand horses around. maybe he rode in a wagon

Shoot, I can't find my pictures of his grave. It's not too far from where I live. It's quite a monument, and very well maintained. There's a historical marker in the town of Seville about him also.
