He was my wife's GGG-Grandfather and was killed early on at First Bull Run because the artillery he was supporting were ordered not to fire on the advancing CSA troops due to mistaken identity. We have seen news clippings of his personal effects being presented to his widow by the Governor of MN and reports that his body was carried from the field by an honor guard during the battle. The GAR post in Waseca was named after him.

BUT... Where on earth is he buried? No one seems to know. I am sure the aftermath of 1st Bull Run was chaos at best but did none of the killed end up in a marked grave?

That is fascinating....you don't usually find such prominent men totally lost--but sometimes they are (Richard Garnett would be a good example). That mass grave at Arlington is a good prospect, but there seem to be other burial spots as well......things were so confused at that point.

I found out that most the union soldiers killed at the First Bull Run were buried in a mass grave... Officers may have been treated differently....I have the links and a post set up but fat finger syndrome happen and I lost it. I will try to rebuilt it as time permits...One question is where is this mass grave?
