I was not able to make out the button on this cap through the glass of the display case. Is this fuzzy image enough for someone to recognize the button?

The fife in the case partly covers the botton of the button.

It appear to be too small for a grown man or perhaps for a small headed man. I believe years ago it had a card that said it was an Illinois Civil War cap. So can we make out the button enough to see if it is a known Illinois button? Perhaps the card said Indiana.

that may be the button. Next tome I am there I will do my best to compare what I see with what was posted here.

Probably a variation of the same, the cap has all of the qualities and characteristics of a war date piece, most likely a militia band item. The height, bound brim and quality of the cap lead me in that direction, but without seeing the interior, is very difficult to tell for sure.

I'll go so far as to observe that the number and overall pattern of the braiding was regulation for both Union and Confederate general officers (but the Union ones were black mohair braid on dark blue kepis), but I'm definitely NOT suggesting this was for one!
