A question for all.

I recently attended a CW forum and was told Turner Ashby after laying in state
at Port Republic, his body was transferred to Waynesboro, Virginia to be placed on the train.
While at the Waynesboro location, Ashby was laying in state in 2 different homes.
Does anyone here know of this? I can't find a thing about it.

I couldn't find anything specific about the Waynesboro stop in the usual newspaper sources I look for (other than it happening). It would have been the norm in that day to take the remains to a private home until they could be transferred to a train. I'm not sure this would be considered "lying in state" so much as normal funereal practice. Having this happen at two separate locations seem unusual, though.

I did also find a newspaper account of the interment that says that both Turner and Richard Ashby's remains were placed in the same, silver-mounted coffin, and there were two other Confederate officers (not identified) interred at the same ceremony, also in a single coffin.

Ashby was killed on Chestnut Hill just outside of Harrisonburg, Va. That is where the monument is.

Thanks a lot for your help.
