Cannonball?...

first time posting. trying to determine what i have...

live in metro atlanta and found this in basement of old house that backs up to peachtree creek.
its 4.5" in diameter.
has number "12" on two sides.
it also has two small dots side by side.

any help is appreciated,

That is an interesting iron ball. I am not so good with cannonballs, but someone will come along shortly and help your question.

I've never seen one with 12 stamped and it doesn't look quite right at the seam. How much does it weigh ? Is it exactly 4.5 inches diameter ? If it's cannon shot it will be 4.52 inches and weigh close to 12.25 pounds.

I'm gonna say it's a shot put.

it is right at 4.5" in diameter. probably around 12 lbs...sounds like i might be taking up shot put.
