What's the diameter or measure it across? Is it iron or steel?

It's about 4&1/2" and a magnet does somewhat pull towards it.

The round divet depression like this is a feature commonly seen on older athletic shot-puts. Others will have a similar sized capped cavity whereas weight medium can be added to calibrate to exact weight.

A 12 pound round shot is 4.40 being close to 4 1/2 many folks get it confused sadly. That round mark is a dead give away as not being a cannonball, as memory serves me its called a spruce hole (I maybe wrong) left during its manufacture. So if not a mill ball, or shotput, it's something else but not a cannonball.

I had what I thought was a cannon ball. Turns out it was an ore crushing ball.

Weight is 11.315 lbs., and due to rust scale, the diameter is anywhere from just under to just over 4.5". My buddy on the bomb team is going to x-ray it just in case, but shot-put, although a little disappointing, makes more sense. thanks for the replies
