Canadians made up a large portion of the Michigan men who served in the Civil War. For example 27% of the black soldiers from Michigan were actually Canadians. It was reported that Michigan "sent scores of brokers to crimp for recruits in Canada." Many more Canadian born Michiagn residents fell under the "declarent aliens' 1864 amendment to the draft law that could deprive ""declarent aliens" of their political rights and deport them if the refused to be conscription. It has been estimated that 10% of the Michiagn men (8,717 men) who served in the Civil War were born in Canada.
