Canada

Here is another interesting sight, with some communication from Canadian soldiers.

Here are a couple of publications that may be of interest, if you can find them.

United States Civil War (1861–1865)
Several thousand Canadians served as soldiers during the United States Civil War, most of them on the Northern (Union) side. For example, about 20,000 Canadians and former Canadians served in Michigan regiments. Canadian involvement in the United States Civil War is discussed in:
Winks, Robin W. Canada and the United States: The Civil War Years. 1960. Reprint. Lanham, Md.: University Press of America, 1988. (Family History Library Call No. 973 H2wrw.)
Service Records
Service records of some Canadians have been abstracted in:
Johnson, Daniel F. The American Civil War: The Service Records of Atlantic Canadians with the State of Maine Volunteers. 2 vols. Saint John, N. B.: Daniel F. Johnson, 1995. (Family History Library Call No. 971.5 M2jd.) It includes the following information about 2,400 soldiers: name, age, physical description, occupation, Canadian residence, Maine regiment, and service dates.

Here in Michigan an untold number of Canadians crossed the border and join Michigan units. One could add Michaign's most famous female soldier Sara Emma Edmond as being a Canadian. One of the problems is that Canadians were not allowed to join American armies. Ways were found to get around this. For example the First U.S. Lancers had prepared enlistment forms with towns in Wisconsin listed as home town for Canadians joining that unit to fill out. So how many Michigan soldiers were really Candia we will never know.

I,am looking for William Hendry who left ont. in 1862 to go and fight with Lincolns men, he stayed until the war was over then went with Custer as a batmen to fight the Indians for a few months, then came back to ont, he came back with a 1856 sword bayonet from a .577 caliber enfield short musket and powder horn, I am trying to find any records of this thanks for the help. Wild Bill

Do you have any more details on Hendry? I have found information on seven William Hendry's.
