The problem with cursive handwriting is two-fold - 1) what script was taught and 2) how did the writer modify it? It helps if you can see how the writer wrote it.

Here is a selection of various styles for a capital J. It is not definitive:

BTW - in many styles the difference between I and J in capitals is minimal.

No surprise that Louisiana would have a number of people with a lovely French name like Dupree. Sadly, I did not find any records on Fold3 that fit any of our guesses. It may be this gentleman didn't serve. He certainly isn't in uniform in the picture.

Maybe you could check with the Universities of VA and LA to see if they have his photo in their collections and compare it to the one you have. Seems he was prominent enough to warrant a photo, especially at the School of Law.

I even tried facial recognition searches and could not find a match for his photo. Seems odd that is the only photo of him. He appears to be about 45, maybe 50 yo. He was a handsome devil.
