Campfires -

I have been thinking about what type of firewood was used. As an experienced camper with the Boy Scout I also thought that dead dry wood was better as it did not smoke as much.

Was there a plentiful supply of dry wood and how did the troops keep from giving away their position from the enemy?

I would imagine you would grab whatever would burn. Gotta have that coffee!!

Fences. And giving away a position didn't enter into it for the main army. Scouts and such didn't light fires

As already stated.... miles and miles of fence rails.
