Today, April 28th is birthday of Marie Harel who is credited with inventing Camembert Cheese. She was born on April 28, 1761 in France, She was a cheese maker. According to legend, during the French Revolution a Monk came to the Manor of Beaumoneal in the Village of Camembert asking for asylum and protection. He met Marie there. He was very impressed with her cheese making. The monk gave her a recipe for cheese that had a crust around it. Thus Camembert Cheese was born.

One of the earliest makers of Camembert Cheese in America was Marin French Cheese of Marin County, California. In 1865 Jefferson Thompson started this company on his farm. It has been producing cheeses ever since, including Camembert Cheese.

Enjoy some Camembert Cheese today and celebrate Marie Harel's birthday.
