Calling all Civil War gamers

I guess the best way to proceed is to ask.
From time to time, interest in a formal meeting place for those who want to talk games is expressed. Most threads I have seen have very brief lives in the Campfire Chat section. But then an inspiring trip down memory lane such as the one James N. just provided brings out the happy kid in all of us!
So, I hope this "questionnaire" loads properly, makes sense, and results in an accurate assessment of the possibility... if nothing else satisfy my personal curiosity, but if more than I will gladly commit time and effort toward a 'launch'.

By "game topics" I mean:
- miniatures (toy soldiers, models, tabletop rule systems, painting and collecting, &c)
- board (hex and counters, point-to-point, dice, cards...)
- computer (digitized board games, sprite-based 'real time' battles and operations...)
- ideas, opinions, preferences, reviews
- after-action reports (!)
- research on orders of battle, tactics, units, ships, &c (!)
- all levels from company skirmish to grand strategy
- memories to share ("I don't game anymore but when I did...")

In other words the only 'limit' would be that American Civil War games and themes take center stage, which seems only natural and reasonable here.

'Nuff said for now. Your turn... and honesty will in no way hurt my feelings.

(Edit: I'm tech-challenged. Multiple votes here don't really make sense but I'm not sure how to fix...)

I voted before I read your post and would like to change my vote to HIGH though it's not as high as that sounds! (It's the "no need for forum" part I disagree with, though my participation would likely be very small.)

Any participation would be more than welcome.
So far, the "highs" have it but the voter turnout is under a dozen - kind of mixed 'cautious optimism' message I guess...

I'm not a board gamer - being a foreigner I'm unfamiliar with the board games available in the US anway - but I enjoy looking at vids or threads about them. I'm an avid computer gamer though, and after Ultimate General: Civil War, I'm looking forward to trying my hand at Grand Tactician that's supposed to come out later this year.

And thanks to Mike we'll soon have a forum for Civil War games. Yay!

I'm a board gamer at heart but I have the Grand Tactician project on my news-feed. If it delivers half of what I see, it's a "take my money already" situation.
As mentioned in the OP, there are a lot of directions for conversation here, so please feel free to bring 'em all!

When I was younger and had the time, money, and space to play board games, that was my preferred method although I did dabble with miniatures. Nowadays, I'm strictly a computer game player.

I personally prefer turn-based, regimental level tactical games although I have played some strategic games that I've enjoyed. At the moment, I'm working my way through the Virginia theater using John Tiller's Campaign series. I've finished Bull Run and Seven Pines and am gearing up for the Seven Days.

I play Richard Berg's "Battle Cry" quite a lot and write scenarios regularly. I also use Warlord games "Black Powder" for traditonal miniature games, and Ganesha Games "Flying Lead" for skirmish games. I'd be glad to post scenarios and AAs.

A forum dedicated to civil war gaming and miniatures could attract the attention of game designers, there's been a few people in the past that have posted on CWT that were in the process of developing war games and they were looking for feedback and ideas, unfortunately they didn't get many responses, at least now they'll be able to post on a dedicated forum where they are pretty much guaranteed to get a few responses.

One other thing that I was thinking about was rules for games, there's quite a few games out there that are designed solely for multiplayer but not everyone enjoys or is able to find gaming partners, there are people out there that print single player rules for multiplayer games, it might be useful if we could get some links in a thread for printable single player games. If anyone has come up with solitaire rules I for one would be interested.

I am a former "Hex Gamer", but now play "Johnny Reb III" on my 9 X 5 foot table with over 1,000 hand-painted miniatures, I also play at a friend's house on a 10 X 12 table. We play 8-10 times a year!

Nice!! Some images of that would be awesome. I've heard only good things about the Johnny Reb rules system.

Never tried any form of Civil War game... but would love to start! I think I'll try some computer games, as miniatures may be a bit out of my range. Any recommendations? There seem to be a fair amount on Steam.
