Enlisted on 8/2/1861 as a Colonel.

On 12/1/1861 he was commissioned into Field & Staff
US Volunteers 1st SharpShooters
He was discharged on 1/2/1864


Promotions:
* Brig-General 3/13/1865 by Brevet
* Major-Gen 3/13/1865 by Brevet


Other Information:
born 9/6/1824 in Phelps, NY
died 3/31/1893 in Washington, DC

- Berdan's US Sharpshooters in the Army of the Potomac
- New York in the War of the Rebellion 1861-1865

Great job again, all the different shades of green in the vegetation and the gtay stone... very good!
I tame it this is a staged photo? Or was it taken when Head established a sniper position?
At any rate I can now imagine much better how things must have been for a Sniper then. Not too much cover, I'd say...
 
I dig pictures of this guy. He's scary looking and intense and interesting, and I'm just too curious to pass him up. Had we occupied the same time and space, he would have popped up on my radar big time.

He looks so much older than 37. Must have had quite a life.

ETA: Find a Grave says he was older:

"Joe was 52 years old at the time he enlisted, but stated his age as 42, otherwise he would have been rejected."

DUH. I just realized the info belongs to Hiram! (He doesn't look 37 either actually.)
