The Tennessee was an ironclad ram which served as the flagship for Admiral Franklin Buchanan. Both he and the ship were captured at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. Immediately following her capture and repair, Tennessee was commissioned in the USN. The ironclad later participated in the Federal assault on Fort Morgan which resulted in the fort's capture. She was then sent to New Orleans for repairs and served on the Mississippi River til the end of the war.

Here is the original Porter design for these vessels. All three, Columbia, Tennessee, and Texas were completed to different plans. The Tennessee was actually constructed to the original plan and altered at Mobile by Assistant Constructor Joseph Pearce with "input" from Franklin Buchanan. Why the ship was not completed as a Columbia - far simpler and a better plan altogether, we have no idea.
