I am making a repro Columbus Ord. Depot Buckshot Arsenal Pack for a friends display collection. The only thing I don't have a clue on is how they kept the powder from trickling into the buckshot area? On B-n-B ammo, you do have that .65 cal round ball to help keep the powder in place, but buckshot rounds have gaps in between the balls, for powder to gather into. How to prevent this the way they did?

From the ones I have seen they had a VERY tight twine wrap between the powder from the buck and another at the end.

Some did have that, others didn't. I might give Dean Thomas a call, see what he knows. His books on the Subject of Civil War cartridges are wonderful to have, sometimes they just don't answer everything!

Some years ago I made few up, used bit of tissue paper stuffed between the balls, and the powder. We fired them out of a repro 42 smoothy, they kicked like a mule, and shot real low!

143 is the tie I'm talking about and the Columbus you are replicating I believe needs to be tighter to solve the problem.

This is an original Columbus Depot shotgun cartridge, it's not tied completely closed off.

I've been wondering about this myself. There would have to be some sort of inner barrier or powder tube but so far I haven't been able to find a period reference. If anyone has any information I'd appreciate it!
