Guess this Butler conversation brought on a lively time...
Even a parade song
Well, welcome to Team Butler!
Here is a copy of Butlers Farewell

There were so many political generals that Lincoln had to deal with let alone wholly incompetent West Point trained generals. there had to have been times when Lincoln must had simply shook his head in disbelief like when he felt he would not win re-election.
IF IF Butler had been given quality fighters who wanted to win the war as compared to win glory for themselves AND if Butler had been willing to let the fighters fight then Old Ben would have come out Ok...ego was another story however.

I've actually always kind of liked Butler... although I'd say reputation wise, he's probably one of the most hated Union Generals. Although, seeing your posts has sparked my interest in Old Ben

Sadly there is no modern Butler history and his book is HUGE

The Damnedest Yankee came out a few years ago about Ben in NO and its ok...most of the letter cited come from me...but for a fun read find a copy of The American Cyclops...or find Beast and Booty

You can guess the slant they have
