One of these I have, the other, only one and probably 2 other officers. I think another but am unsure- anyone know who Buford's staff would be in the second photo here, please?

USMA grads, besides Buford, in pencil, #2 Col Delos Sackett, Inspector General, #3 Col Henry Francis Clark #4 Major Nelson H. Davis , Assis. Inspector General, there's on unnumbered man standing on the R., Col. George Ruggles, Aide-de-Camp ( at the time )

Miles Keogh, Buford- maybe one more, still not certain on him.

The top photograph is not Buford's staff. It was taken at Falmouth during the winter of 1862-1863, when Buford was the Army of the Potomac's chief of cavalry. He is pictured with other staff officers.

The bottom photo is false and doctored. The officer on the far left, Capt. Joseph O'Keeffe, was captured at Brandy Station during the attack on Yew Ridge during the afternoon phase of the battle, and was not present when this image was taken in August or September 1863. He had not yet been exchanged. An undoctored version of the photo--without O'Keeffe inserted into it--exists.

From left to right: O'Keeffe (again, not present), Capt. Myles W. Keogh, Capt. Peter Penn-Gaskell (a direct, linear descendant of William Penn), Capt. Craig Wadsworth (nephew of Gen. James Wadsworth, who had served on the staff of John F. Reynolds), and Lt. Albert P. Morrow. We know that this image is post-Gettysburg, because Wadsworth and Morrow both joined Buford's staff AFTER the Battle of Gettysburg.

As a young man, Morrow had movie-star good looks. Keogh described him in a letter to his brother as being "the devil among the ladies." :-) Keogh, of course, was KIA at the Little Big Horn. Morrow remained in the Regular Army and retired a full colonel. For a biographical sketch of Morrow, see: http://civilwarcavalry.com/?p=117

I love that pic. I think I can see three pocket watch chains in that picture.

Great find Annie. Have seen the bottom photo but not the top.

So is Craig Wadsworth the guy who looks like HJ Kilpatrick?

Boy, thanks so much! You can't make 3 mouse clicks without bumping into doctored photos! I wonder why someone would take the time to include someone who was not there? Only a knock-down, drag out cavalry historian would have caught that, being awfully familiar with who was where and when- am guessing the revisionist at work had no clue either.

It's funny. You see these in LoC and National Archives frequently without a key. It's very cool we have those resources at all, not complaining, believe me. Sometimes they allow the public to help, entering information- think I'll look these up. Love knowing who people are in these old photos, make History more real if that make sense.

Here is the undoctored version of the image of Buford and his staff, without O'Keeffe in it.View attachment 73795
That is very interesting. When I first looked at this picture, I was struck by the background and the rug being different from the picture JPK posted. As well, the men on the ends have "props" which have been edited out. I would conjecture that this picture has been superimposed on JPK's picture.

Probably so.
