Brown's Mill/McCook's Raid

Looking to add to my knowledge of Brown's Mill and the McCook Raid. Anyone have reading or watching recommendations? I have Sherman's Horsemen which has been helpful and other bits in the form of diary entries. With 2nd Alabama Cavalry's help I have a better idea of the roads that existed and have sketched them into my book maps. But still much to learn as to the movement of troops.

Here is one map I did find on the net that seems fairly detailed. Not sure of it's origin. My ggGrand Dad JM Cash was with the 5th Tenn. Cav(McKenzie's) of Ashby's Brigade. Ashby's was split with the 5th and 1st Tenn. merged with Harrison's 8th and 11th Texas (Harrison Commanding, then Red Jackson). They had met the diversion of Maj. Paine's force near Campbeltown where the latter officer was killed. They went through Fairburn to Fayettville and then Jonesboro. After skirmishing at Jonesboro they went back to Fayetteville and past Newnan to Browns Mill. After they routed McCook, the 5th Tenn. Cav. was among those who chased Col. Brownlow into the Chattahoochie and got his clothes and personal effects. This was the high point for Wheeler's Cav. It would go steadily downhill from there.

I live not far from that battlefield. Have been to it several times and walked it. It takes hours to walk all the paths. If you didn't know it was a battlefield you would never know it by walking it.

Ashby's Brigade, previous to Jonesboro had been split with the 5th and 1st Tenn. Cavs operating with the 8th and 11th Texas of Harrisons Brigade. They had routed Major Paine's command near Campbeltown(killing Maj. Paine) and had followed the fight to the Macon Railroad South of Jonesboro via Fayetteville. Following the Battle at Brown's Mill the 5th Tenn. Cav. And 3rd AR would chase Col. Brownlow's forces across the Chattahoochie.

Just got my copy of the Mathews book. I'm looking forward to reading it. I cheated a little and read his section on the fight near Campbelltown and he has Harrison's Texas Brigade there. But from Adjt. WG Allen's Reminiciences I have learned that Harrison's and Ashby's Brigades were split. At Campbelltown were Ashby's 1st and 5th Tenn. Cavs with Harrison's 8th and 11th Texas. It was this split command that met Col. Pain and which unfortunately mortally wounded him.

By far the best book I have ever seen on this topic is Sherman's Horsemen by David Evans. It is extremely in depth and possibly my favorite book of all time. He has chapters about things like Brown's Mill.
