War Service September 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/2nd Divn/IV Corps in Peninsula campaign, commanded 2nd Bde/2nd Divn/VI Corps at Seven Days (w), Antietam (w), commanded 1st Divn/VI Corps at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, June 1863 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers - later revoked, commanded Dept. of the Monongahela, commanded 1st Divn/XVIII Corps at Cold Harbor, Petersburg, resigned because of poor health July 1864.
