I haven't posted anything in a while due to different circumstances but I'm back looking to pick peoples brains.

Possibly the wrong section, but it kind of covers two areas of the forums so I'll start here and see what happens and what others views on the subject are.

I game in 28mm miniatures, and once the Uk is opened up in a couple of months, our club is looking to do a Civil war campaign including alternative time lines outcomes etc, depending on the outcome of each game.

So I'm trying to find a list of the available British / Canadian forces that formed around the time of the trent affair and more importantly the flags they carried, obviously its semi fictional but I'd still like to be as accurate as possible. being from the UK i still find our flags one of the harder things to work out.

If anyone could help me with my search i would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards.

So I'm trying to find a list of the available British / Canadian forces that formed around the time of the trent affair
The process of forming troops was largely stymied by the climbdown, but we know the British battalions already in Canada and the ones alerted to go, and we can reasonably assume that most of the rest of what was in Britain would have arrived before the thaw (plus troops from the Mediterranean).

We also know that the Canadians on mobilization were to get red coat uniforms with blue facings.

I suspect the flags would have been the usual Queen's Colour and Regimental Colour with Canadian forces using British-style flags; there's such a large list of battalions which could have been used that it's not far off you being able to take your pick for the regimental flags. There was no established Canadian flag at this point and they would just have used the British Union flag, though Nova Scotia appears to have had one:

In terms of the order of battle, I put one together for my alternate history timeline which provides for one British-Canadian field corps each in five locations (Nova Scotia, Montreal, Quebec, Niagara, Sarnia) and one reserve division (at Kingston) - might be worth considering as a starting point so you have names for things?
(This does not include Canadian militia regiments, which were largely for static defence and corps of observation but which would be quite substantial in number.)

Halifax Volunteer Artillery (position)
Can
Art
Bty

All batteries of foot artillery would be 6-gun batteries using Armstrong 12 pounders, and horse artillery I believe had six 9 pounder Armstrongs each.
All batteries of position artillery would be using 4x Armstrong 20 pounders if Canadian and 4x 40 pounders if British. This means all artillery is breech loading rifles.
All infantry is armed with the Enfield (and the British ones are effectively elite sharpshooters) and the British cavalry is armed with the short Enfield plus melee weapons. Canadian cavalry would probably have short Enfields as well but not be as good with them.
Some of the listed Canadian volunteer battalions are fictional, but the companies existed to create them.

So to break down those battalions listed. British only, obviously all the Canadians were in Canada, they live there.

Pre crisis troops:

Canada
1/17th, 30th, 47th and 4/60th
Maritimes
62nd and 63rd

Reinforcements sent during the crisis:

1/16th (minus one company) arrived at Bic 27th December
1/Rifles arrived at Halifax 26th December, then tried for the St Lawrence and failed. Available from the 3rd January, arrived at St Johns on the 9th.
96th had a troubled crossing and would not reach the Maritimes until Feb (both ships hit storms)
2/Scots Fusilier Guards arrived Halifax 9th Jan
1/Grenadier Guards arrived Cape Breton 30th Dec
2/16th 3 Jan Halifax
2/17th 9 Jan Halifax
1/15th arrived 15-24 Jan (both ships hit storms)
(total 8 battalions arrived)

Historically some troops were sent down the sledge route through the Maritimes, which turned out to be quite efficient (about 200 a day - by 1st Feb the 62nd, 1/Rifles, 1/16th detachment and the 1/Grenadier Guards had already passed through Montreal and the 1/SFG was en route) and there were plans to use the 62nd to garrison and protect it in the event of war.

Alerted to move to Canada but not sent:

Infantry

2/Coldstream Guards
1/10th
1/11th
2/12th
2/20th
36th
45th
55th
58th
76th
(total 10 battalions alerted but not sent)

Cavalry

9th Lancers
12th Lancers
16th Lancers

Other home infantry battalions were:
  • Ready for Canada if ordered: 17 bns (1/8th, 2/18th, 2/19th, 2/21st, 2/25th, 26th, 29th, 31st, 32nd, 41st, 49th, 53rd, 1/60th, 61st, 78th, 84th and 86th)
  • Retraining after foreign service, available in spring '62: 9 bns (2/1st, 1/2nd, 1/3rd and 87th as first tranches, 1/5th, 1/24th, 37th, 64th and 73rd as second)
  • Recovering from foreign service, remain at home: 1 bn (59th)

Other home cavalry regiments were:

1st Life Guards
2nd Life Guards
Royal Horse Guards
4th-6th Dragoon Guards inclusive
1st-5th Dragoons inclusive
10th Hussars
11th Hussars
13th Lt Dragoons
14th Lt Dragoons
15th Hussars
18th Dragoons

(total 17 regiments not alerted)

All the home or in-Canada artillery is listed on the above ORBAT.

In addition the availability of troops in the Mediterranean and elsewhere is:

Total garrisons
Cephalonia: 1 (2/4th)
Corfu: 3 (2/2nd, 1/9th and 2/9th)
Gibraltar: 5 (2/6th, 2/7th, 2/8th, 1/25th and 100th)
Malta: 5 (2/3rd, 2/15th, 1/22nd, 2/22nd and 2/23rd, with 4/Rifle Brigade joining)
Barbados: 3 (1/21st, 1st West Indies and 3rd West Indies)
Bahamas: 1 (2nd West Indies)
Jamaica: 2 (1/14th and 4th West Indies)
Bermuda: 1 (39th)
Ceylon: 1 (50th)
Mauritius: 2 (2/5th and 2/24th)
The Cape colony has 4 battalions (2/10th, 2/11th, 2/13th and 85th)

All of these garrisons could be reduced to one regiment, except for the Cape which really needs two. This means that the total number of battalions from garrisons elsewhere that could be obtained is:
2 Corfu
4 Gibraltar
4 Malta (plus 4/Rifles for a fifth)
2 Barbados (but perhaps just take the 1/21st for one)
1 Jamaica
1 Mauritius
2 Cape

Leading to a grand total of (in inf battalions):

Pre crisis 6
Historical arrivals 8
Alerted 10
Available promptly from home 17
Available later from home 9
Available from colonies 16
= 66
(plus the Royal Canadian Rifles which was not enumerated in this post)

The order of battle I laid out above only uses 51, so there is scope for growth. The remaining 15 infantry battalions could be combined with Canadian militia to make some of the divisions triangular instead of binary, or used as battle casualty replacments.

They might send over extra cavalry but only if it turns out they don't have enough. A brigade of British cavalry with some Canadian support is enough to outmatch Union cavalry in the appropriate theatre unless the Union really focuses much of their cavalry on a single area (i.e. if the Union focuses half the AotP cavalry on Montreal specifically they'd have about ten regiments against three, but this means nothing is facing Quebec and so those British cav could shift over).

Ah thank you so much for your reply, there's a lot for me to go over but it looks like you've provided me with enough if not more information than I expected. This will help me a great deal and aid me in locating the correct flags and uniforms needed for the campaign and also for the knowledge of things.

Being a Buller, I always like seeing a Buller listed within any military information so 1st Corps - 1st division will definitely be something I will look into more.

Thank you again.

Being a Buller, I always like seeing a Buller listed within any military information so 1st Corps - 1st division will definitely be something I will look into more.
It's Sir George Buller (then a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath), if it matters. Historically promoted Lt. Gen in 1862 at the age of 60, I suspect here he'd get the promotion before the fighting began.

The Guards Brigade is always 1st Bde 1st Div in this period if possible, AIUI (custom) and here I put them in 1st Corps as well because they were some of the first troops to arrive.

If it helps, I also constructed a Union ORBAT under the assumption that the Union would send five or six divisions to attack Montreal, plus one to Ogdensburg, 2 to Buffalo (Niagara Frontier) and one to Detroit. It's not got all the Union cavalry on it (just the Montreal area cavalry) but it includes all the inf regiments and brigadiers.

I even did a campaign map on the one hex per mile scale. This is something of a minor passion of mine!

Thanks again I'll be doing a little digging where possible on him, once I've worked out the other bits I need.

I'm reading over the details above it'll take me a little while to process it, and work out, then I'll build up for my own force and pass the rest on to the other party members involved on my side providing you don't object to the sharing of information.

Although it does sound tempting to have the union ORBAT, purely for the information, I've been drawn for the Confederates and I have no plans for assisting the opposition.

Kind regards

I've got one of those too! There's a surprising amount of Confederate force on the coasts to reassign inland.
I was able to pull together 39 brigades for the East (the Shenandoah Valley and east of there), 9 for the Middle (Cumberland Gap and points between there and the Shenandoah) and 36 for the West, plus another 40 regiments from the coast not yet assigned.

Wow really is a passion. And i might be interested in that if it was available, although I don't know who / where I've been assigned it might aid me and my fellow confederate Officers as the game unfolds.

Kind regards

The CSA ORBAT I put together was:

This creates a setup of:

JEJ has the existing Confederate army facing Washington.
RE Lee has the reinforcements stripped from the eastern seaboard etc. and assigned to the East.
The "MID" section is the troops in West Virginia/Cumberland Gap etc.
ASJ has four three-division corps in the West.

Division strengths:

1: JEJ GW Smith Wilcox 13
2: JEJ Longstreet AP Hill 12

And in addition to that, there is another "floating" corps' worth to assign (this does not completely strip the coast, by the way, there are still a few bdes in garrison)
Regiments after the "+" are loose regiments added into the brigades from Gist, New Bern, Roanoke Inlet, Fort Fisher.
