Boil an ounce and a half of tamarinds, three ounces of currants, and two of stoned raisins in three pints of water until near one third is wasted; then strain it. A Soldier's Diary.

Now if I had a source for tamarind! I do a bit of Indian and Asian cooking, and a lot of recipes call for it. It's a shame how many foods which used to be commonly eaten by America have fallen out of common use.
 
Thanks for the interesting recipe and the neat old ad for raisins. Also for Donna's link to tamarinds. They most likely would have been imported from the Carribean islands to the US, I'm guessing.

You might check in an Asian or Indian market if there is one near you, or online.
