I had always assumed that since Lucius was a nephew of Leonidas Polk he was nothing but a benefactor of nepotism, little better than a "political general"; but on reading things last year like Stonewall of the West and others about Cleburne, his division, and the war in the West I see nothing could be further from the truth. The loss of qualified brigadiers like Polk and their replacement by less qualified men like Lowery reduced the effectiveness of even Cleburne's Division, thereby contributing to slip-ups like at occurred at Jonesboro. ( For the record, Lowery did NOT replace Polk at the head of his brigade, but there was a continual lessening of command capabilities in the Atlanta Campaign, especially at regimental and brigade level. )
