Botched Battle at Bristoe

Wasn't Lee ill at North Anna? Something like stomach flu that would make anyone grumpy? Plus he thought he had an opportunity to crush part of Grant's army - even when being forced to retreat, he was always looking to turn the tables - so it must have been frustrating to see it misfire.

Yes he was ill, so much he couldn't get up and direct operations himself. North Anna is where he had laid a trap for Grant using the now famous Hog Snout line. Notice that the apex is anchored on the river and that one fortified wing could be held with a minimal amount of troops while the other side could attack Union troops as they crossed the river. In order for Grant to reinforce one side or the other, he'd have to cross the river twice.

The North Anna is a County park and the earthworks are original and very well preserved.
