History Booyah

Today was a cold day even by Wisconsin standards and @donna thread on potato soup got me thinking about booyah which is a slow cooked stew brought to Wisconsin in the 1850's by French speaking Belgians. There are numerous variations of this recipe.

Interesting. I never heard of "Walloons" (French-speaking Belgians) until I went to college in a place where there was a community of them nearby.

Sounds great, never heard of putting rutabagas in a stew. S&S cafeteria is the only place I've ever seen rutabagas served, but I don't get out much…..

Yeah I've been around Belgium a bit and southern Belgium is French speaking and the north is more Dutch or Flemish cultured. The food is different but as a foreigner the people seemed similar enough to me. I tried the Flemish stew Carbonnade on my last visit and it was delicious.
