Welcome to the forum from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This is a very good book to begin your civil war studies. If you search on this forum you will find several very good threads that list a lot of very good suggestions for beginners to read and study in order to expand their knowledge of the civil war as well as reconstruction. A good piece of advice to keep in mind: always ask a lot of questions: there are a lot of excellent civil war scholars and authors on this forum at your disposal who are very helpful. Yes, Reveille in Washington 1860-1865 by Margaret Leech. She won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1942; (another Pulitzer winner as above).

I can't recommend your first two or three books, because I'll go straight for the naval history. Once you're on book #4, though, and if you've enjoyed Battle Cry of Freedom, check out McPherson's War on the Waters.

Shelby Foote (a novelist, not a professional historian) wrote a trilogy that makes the Civil War fairly easy to understand, even though each book is very long. Beautiful writing.

As a soldier, Lincoln started as a Captain before becoming a private. In the Republican presidential convention of 1860, Lincoln was nowhere close to the top level of candidates. Lincoln had a "second home" in a barbershop owned by a black man. Lincoln was challenged to a duel and he accepted the challenge.
