I'm curious about CSR bookmark references such as that for "Claim No 3" on the attached CSR card. I'm guessing that these refer to more extensive files at the National Archives that would provide more details about the incident described on the card. Is there any way to access or request information from these files online? How much more information do they typically provide, and is it worth trying to track them down?

Sometimes the hookmarks are nothing; sometimes they turn out to be the transcript of the Andersonville Raiders trial that was thought not to exist (yes, that's how I found it!). They are always worth pursuing. Back before covid, I would email the NARA and inquire about the reference to the bookmark (be sure to include the bookmark number) and they would generally send me a complimentary copy of it by return email. Not sure if they'd do that now.

Very Interesting! Thanks! Will try an email inquiry, and see what happens.

The front jacket of a CMSR sometimes reflects a book mark which, as has been said, is a reference to another file.

The jacket sometimes (but not always) includes a card that summarizes the subject matter of the book mark file.

The external file itself could be 2 pages or 100 pages long and it always worth retrieving. They are in Record Group 94, Records of the Adjutant General's Office.

I retrieved THIS ONE in relation to the samples above recently.
