Well, the "latex" which is a thin layer of material just under the skin of the plant does have that effect and, in fact, can be fatal in large quantities and cause kidney damage. Much of the Aloe plant, though, is safe to consume in certain forms. I take a powdered Aloe product every day and have no ill effects whatsoever.I had an opportunity to visit the Aloe Vera factory in Aruba recently.
Our guide explained that the juice from cut Aloe, if ingested, causes explosive results.
