Is your rifle a M1859 and have the JT inspector's cartouche on the flat? There also needs to be a punch mark on the inside cover of the patch box. If a M1859 you are certainly in the range of the 42nd PA "Bucktails" as 57275 was issued to Co D.Hi , new member. Still looking for an original hammer and any possible info as to who owned this rifle. Berdan DST #57283

Good to know......thanks and I think I saw you post something to that effect some time ago, but I didn't retain....Most respectfully, the "punch mark" on the inside of the Patch Box Lid is common to all of the Sharps Rifles, not just to just the Berdan versions. Unfortunately, it is a myth that has been perpetuated for quite some time.
