She didn't have the best conformation to begin with but was probably ridden and mounted way too hard and too long for it, and made matters much worse. I'm so glad the poor old thing was well-cared for at the end.

Unbeknownst to Mr. Phillips, there were at least two or three other equine civil war veterans still living at the time.

What crazy good stories the old things could tell- nice to see one of her stories! What's also nice is where she ended up. Somewhere I have a photo of ' Old Baldy ', caption reading he was one of Meade's war horses. The old thing is at Schuylkill Arsenal hitched to a cart. I detest that photograph.
