Belle Isle in Richmond was reactivated as a military prison in order to process the large number of Union soldiers captured at Chancellorsville. Although many of these prisoners would ultimately be exchanged before the Dix-Hill Cartel broke down, the overcrowding that ensued at Belle Isle and the other Richmond prisons eventually led to the establishment of Camp Sumter Military Prison at Andersonville in early 1864.

Had a relative from the 104th NY that was taken there after being captured at Gettysburg. He died there of starvation.
