War Service May 1861 Capt. in 1st Maine, October 1861 Col. of 10th Maine, Cedar Mountain, Antietam (w), 1863 recruited 29th Maine - Col., commanded a brigade in XIX Corps in Red River campaign, served under Sheridan in Shenandoah Valley campaign, commanded a brigade in Winchester and Fisher's Hill, November 1864 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers.
Brevet Promotions Brig. Gen. U.S.V. August 22 1864, Maj. Gen. U.S.V. March 13 1865.
Post War Career State adjutant general, state treasurer.
