A quick business trip brought me to Baltimore today. My hotel is only a couple blocks from the Inner Harbor so I walked down to find a dinner of Maryland Crab Soup and Lump Crab Cakes (Don't tell my wife I had them without her.). The early days of the Civil War found Baltimore in the thick of events so I snapped a few appropriate photos with my phone.

Federal Hill - located on the south edge of the Inner Harbor. On the night of May 12 - 13, 1861, about 1000 men with artillery under command of then Brigadier General Benjamin Butler occupied the hill. The artillery was aimed toward the center of the city and there was little doubt Butler would have used it had unrest in the city continued.

USS Constellation - commissioned in 1854 this vessel was the flagship of the African Squadron from 1859 t0 1861. During it service it captured one ship with over 700 enslaved Africans aboard (they were released in Liberia) and two other ship outfitted to accommodate slaves. During the War the Constellation served in the Mediterranean to protect American shipping.

Pratt Street looks a lot different today than it did on April 19, 1861, when the 6th Massachusetts Militia was attacked by secessionist sympathizers.

A Civil War Trails placard commemorates the riot.

Not CW, but of interest. I was not aware Baltimore had its own World Trade Center. A memorial commemorating 9/11/2001 stands in front of it with three beams from the NY City Trade Center on top of it. The names of 68 Marylanders killed in the 9/11 attacks are inscribed on one face.
