This photo from the Maryland Historical Society is actually undated, but it shows U.S. Army troops on Baltimore's Federal Hill with their guns aimed at City Hall and downtown streets.
May 13, 1861 was the day that Gen. Benjamin Butler seized the city, effectively ending the pro-secession movement in Baltimore and securing the vital Baltimore & Ohio Rail Road line that connected Washington, D.C. to the rest of the North.
