Authenticity questions regarding a confederate plate

Hello, I am hoping to get some opinions regarding a buckle I inherited from my stepfather. He was born and raised in Savannah Ga. and participated in Civil war and coin collecting throughout his life. I inherited many Union and Confedrate Civil war items from him, including a very nice dug Atlanta arsenal buckle that he had Steve Mullinax authenticate. I had seen that one many times throughout the years but when I started going through all of his collection I came across this buckle that I had not seen before. it is different in size and shape from the authenticated buckle. Thanks to anyone who can give me more insight.

This one is the Virginia style but I'm not sure if it is period. The dimensions on it should be 48.8 x 71.5 mm or 49.9 x 71.5 mm. There something about the hooks that just doesn't look right and the face dimples kind of have me leaning repop. I will look in Mullinax's book when I get home.

Thank You! the buckle looks so clean compared to the one he had authenticated. I guess someone could have cleaned it at some point. Maybe he never showed it to me because he knew it was a re pop I just don't know.

As I'm writing this from home I can't claim to be an expert. Experts have to be at least fifty miles from home. That said, I have seen those dimples before but can't remember where. One thing to remember in clean buckles is many confederate veterans bought new uniforms and accouterments for reunions and Bannerman sold surplus Civil War items well into the 20th century. My wild guess is this might be a United Confederate Veterans item. Of course it could also be a hard used reenactor buckle.

Very interesting! I do know that he did re enacments from time to time. I know he purchased many Civil war items from estate sales in the small towns around Savannah. He was a tour guide at fort Pulaski at one time as well and loved Civil war history. I enjoyed vacationing down there growing up and having him show me around the many battle sites around Georgia. He was a wealth of Civil war Knowledge.

After my last post I pulled down "Repro Buckle of Civil War" by Howard R. Couch. Page 49 list a 46x68 CSA with the dimpled background as a Bannerman, possibly from the early 1900s. Bannerman advertised them as being made from the original molds but, "One authority notes that the Bannerman plates come in six different sizes."

I really appreciate everyone taking the time to help me! What a great community of enthusiasts this site has, to be so willing to help. The dimpling had me stumped as well. I have seen several different confedrate plates over the years at different shows and in pictures with my step father and never seen that type of finish. I will have to check out that book.

UVC, try faith. Rareair, one thing I noticed was the broken hook and the raised single hook. Those suggest that this buckle has been used a good bit. If it is an early Bannerman that might suggest the UCV connection.

Wow! that's great that you have the original box the plate came in. And to think it only cost 4 cents to ship it back then! lol
