I recently came across this photograph. The caption had them listed as the Asbury Guards.

This militia unit from Putnam County, Indiana mainly consisted of civilians located around the town of Greencastle and students from Indiana Asbury College (now DePauw University) which is located in Greencastle. One notable member of the Asbury Guard was Eli Lilly who joined shortly after the the guard was formed. He would later go on to serve in various Union units and reach the rank of colonel. He later founded the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly & Co.

@NFB22 what is the source of this photo?

It was later noted that a large number of "Asbury Guards" became officers of the Union Army during the war.

It's not for sure the Asbury Guards, could be another militia unit from Putnam County as it had a few different units but I'm inclined to believe its the Asbury Guards judging by the youthfulness of nearly all of those pictured and that would make sense given the unit had many of the college's students within it's ranks.

Still a neat photograph!
