If you have ever had any doubts about whether or not the powder within a Civil War Artillery shell is still dangerous, go to Larry Hicklen's website: www.midtenrelics.com and look under new items.

there's also stories of people taking them and setting old shells in front of there fireplace and thinking and how wonderful it looks. Then winter comes around they fire up the fire place next thing you know that whole side of the house is gone.:banghead::cannon::timebomb::skull:

I bought a 200# Parrott shell from a very reliable dealer and since it was full of mud and didn't have as fuze in it, I didn't really worry about it -much. When I got home I stuck a garden hose in it to clean the mud out and found out that it was still full of powder. When the powder dried I set fire to it and had the same result that Larry did. That day I learned 2 very valuable lessons 1. All because they look safe and you are told that they are disarmed, check them over very carefully and 2. (And maybe even more important) Be sure that they are very well secured before you take off with them. A shell/bolt/ball that big rolling around loose will take a jeep right off of the road when the load shifts.
