Army Pay Drawn By Generals

How did generals handle army pay during the war? Typically paymasters wouldnt show up for months, then the soldiers would draw their pay. For a BG, drawing five months of pay would be ~1500, equivalent to $55,000 in today's money.

Would they just stuff it in their pockets? 😃
