On this date, 142 years ago, General Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to General Grant. I'm surprised that another poster hasn't mentioned this before:lee: :grant: .

I can't believe I mispelled Appomattox!

Matt, believe it or not, I searched the Washington and Richmond newspapers yesterday looking for at least one article to post, but all I found was what you posted up. So, maybe this ain't the year for Appomattox.

Obviously you gentlemen haven't been reading my THIS DAY WITH THE ARMY OF TENNESSEE posts. Granted, (no pun) Lee had his own army, but Appomattox has been mentioned.

Appomattox was one of the rare times in history when human dignity prevailed, as least for the moment. Men representing two very exhausted armies were doing their level best to bring relief to overworn combatants and a broken nation.

Virginia Newspapers

I wonder how the Virginia newspapers handled the Appomattox surrender anniversary, for the twenty five years after that surrender?
