Recently acquired and cleaned up this beautiful 3" Broun shell. Typical of Brouns, it was found on an exceptionally late-war battlefield, but it has an interesting story behind it.
This shell was originally found near Appomattox, about halfway to Farmville, Virginia. As indicated by the sabot, this bird was non-fired and was found in a stockpile of identical shells, likely within the remains of an abandoned limber or a dumping ground for ordnance rendered purposeless by the events of Appomattox.
It's very cool to get a Broun with the sabot still on, as their relatively fragile thickness meant they didn't survive all that much on fired projectiles.
This shell also retains its wooden fuse adapter which is really neat too (before anyone asks, the shell was drilled on the side and the powder cavity flushed out)
Really happy to get my hands on one, Broun shells have fascinated me for a while, it's neat to see how material shortages directly influenced their design.
