My G-G-G-Grandfather's brother (John Glenn Steed) enlisted as a private in the 41st Ga Vol Infantry, Co. D on March 4, 1862. On April 1, 1862 he was "appointed adjutant". He died of Typhoid fever May 28, 1862 at Corinth, Ms. I have several letters and a speech he gave prior to the war. He was a well educated man with beautiful penmanship. I suppose that got him "appointed" as Adjutant. My question is....what would his official rank have been if he was an Adjutant? Any help greatly appreciated.

Adjutant was a job --- like Quartermaster. If he was Adjutant to a senior enough officer, he would have been of a junior (usually) rank (1st Lt perhaps). Very senior officers (Army commanders) might have a friend lawyer occupy the position with a rank as high as Colonel. If your man was officially appointed, there should be a Special Order announcing his new position.

On another note. It is said that though he died May 28th, that he was buried September 7, 1862. L.P. Bonds officiated the funeral. I show L.P. Bonds from Iuka, Ms, not far from Corinth. Why so long to bury? No grave has ever been found by my family, who has searched for many years now.

He is listed on the Field Staff Roster under 2 Colonels and a Major. A Colonel having led the 41st Ga Vols, Army of Tennessee. After the Adjutants are listed, is the Sargent Major, and other NCO ranks. I assume he may have been a 1st or 2nd Lt?
