I've had a family tree here here, off & on, since 2003. 2,487 names, 1,131 photos, and quite a bit of Civil War history. Up to now when my subscription has expired, I've always been able to continue to access original records I've already downloaded to my tree even when my account was inactive. I can no longer do that. Wondering if someone has encountered the same thing ?

You might consider getting a program such as "Family Tree Maker", which is produced by the same folks who make Ancestry.com. "Family Tree Maker" resides on your computer, and you can download your family tree info from Ancestry.com directly into "Family Tree Maker" and keep it there as a back up. There's even a synch-up function that will move your online Ancestry.com updates to your "Family Tree Maker" file on your computer, and visa versa, so you can do work on your tree either online or off and still keep both sides updated. Good thing is that if you let your subscription to Ancestry.com expire, you still have your tree fully available for review or updates on your computer.

Two additional points:
1) I have Family Tree Maker and am generally happy with it.
2) I don't own shares in the company nor do any of my family members work there.

I downloaded mine before my subscription ran out (some funky file extension) because I was told I would not access to ANY docs and that they may delete the tree. I did so and found some nice little freebie program that does a good job of organizing data and that I can manually add docs and names to.

I have this as well and definitely recommend it. Not to mention it is relatively cheap, too.
