Burgess, Lauren Cook, An Uncommon Soldier Oxfrd University Press, 1994.
I have to admit I was most impressed by this little book, well worth $10. I enjoy reading and deciphering original letters and this is one heck of a collection of letters. It is in fact, to date, the only known collectionof letters written by a woman portraying a man during the Civil War. To anyone w/ an interest in the subject I would strongly suggest picking this up.
Private Lyons Wakeman (Sarah Roseta Wakeman) is buried in the military cemetary in New Orleans. She died of dysentery during the Red River Campaign after serving w/ her Regiment from 1862-64. She was never discovered, despite spending at least a month in an Army hospital.
