I normally avoid such, but this guy seems to be working on a public YouTube series about Vicksburg.
He is putting out some great information in his first video.
As his relative was at Vicksburg, he's very interested in everything .

For anyone not familiar with the details of the Vicksburg Campaign, he's also explaining everything better than a lot of official historians:

Part (I):

I think our Grant fans will enjoy this as well.

Check out this guy's YouTube channel for the rest.

Seems what I posted above may be his introduction video.

This is Part One :

"The importance of Vicksburg was recognized almost immediately"

Not really. Barely anyone thought about Vicksburg until McClernand put the bug in Lincoln's ear in late September 1862.

It's unfortunate it didn't happen a couple of months earlier, because Steele landed at Snyder's Bluff in August, tore some stuff up, and left. If the federal army starts the Vicksburg Campaign in control of Snyder's Bluff they would have had interior lines to any point from Canton to Jackson to Vicksburg.

It's pretty clear that Lincoln told Porter "Vicksburg is the key" when he called him to Washington in November 1862 to take command of the brown water navy, not prior to New Orleans as he later wrote.
