This image of an American militia man in uniform has been publish in several books and magazines. I was wondering if anyone has seen any new information on what American militia unit he was in?

It might have a German American militia company uniform because it does sort of have a "German" look to the uniform.

The possible black looking uniform, and skull and crossbones insignia is more reminiscent of Prussian uniforms more than anything. But I don't reckon it automatically means German immigrants, as if I'm not mistaken, Prussians were a minority in German nationalities that immigrated to the U.S. so my first thought is Americans copying the Prussians.

I'd like to know what militia unit he's from, if he is indeed from one.

Major Bill, Thanks for bumping up your other Hussar thread. I think I'm up to speed now.
The German 17th Totenkopf (Death Head) Hussars are worth looking into. That unit went back to the Napoleonic Wars. Maybe this fellow had his uniform patterned after theirs.

I found this when I googled 'Totenkoff' :
"The primarily Prussian 41st Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry, Mustered in: June 6, 1861-Mustered out: December 9, 1865 wore a skull insignia."

Interesting. However, this image would seem to show a mounted militia company.

I believe it is a NJ militia unit. I found the crossed bones relic hunting as a teenager around Drewrys Bluff in VA. Oddly, I can't find a record of that particular unit being in that area.

These skull and cross bones were not unknown in the pre Civil War militias.

A Georgia Hussar Uniform 1860's???

Was the georgia Richmond Hussars A differnent unit?

I am assuming that Cobb's Legion Calvary Brigade, Richmond Hussars were a different unit. I believe I have a black and white drawing of their uniforms some where .I can see if I can find it.

This what I have. Is is drawn by Richard M. Harrison and appear in Never Give Up This Field "Georgia Troops in the Civil War by Thomas G. Rodgers. Thomas G. Rodgers states says They wore black "Hardee" hats with black plumes, army blue jackets with yellow trim, and sky blue pants with yellow trim. Their equipment included the Sharps carbine.."
