Always something to learn

So I started reading Dakota War Whoop about the Dakota (not Sioux as they didn't call themselves that) uprising during the Civil War. What I didn't realize is that the Union also had a general H. H. Sibley and lo! he's a cousin of Confederate General Henry Hopkins Sibley. Union General Sibley however is much more competent though.

There's always something to learn.

Do you know how they were related specifically? I tried to trace the connection once and couldn't find where they fit together. Were the families still in touch and considering each other as family before the war, or was it just one of those related-on-paper things?
