allie,

I have no idea what his first wife's name was. His daughter,(my g-g-grandmother) was Sarah Frances Rowe and she became Sarah Frances Bingham, 1848-1914. In 1860 he was in Alabama, and the 1880 census shows him in Hill County, Texas. The 1900 and 1910 census puts Sarah Frances Bingham also in Hill County, Texas. I don't even know when he died (the date that is). Hope this helps, I know it's not much but it's all I have.

I'm not seeing any Rowe listed in the combined service records in Browne's artillery - but your cousin's information is so specific he obviously got it from somewhere. Did he say what his source was?

There are two AW Rowes, one which is definitely an Alex, in other Tennessee artillery companies. I'm wondering if this is one of those situations where a combined force put him in another unit and his service is only recorded in one of them.

Allie,
the Brown Horse Artillery was more formally known as, Captain W.R. Marshall's Tennessee Light Artillery Battery. Alex was in company C.
My g-g-grandmother had two children, my g-grandmother, Margaret Virginia, and her sister, Willie Belle. My cousin is Willie Belle's g-granddaughter and got this information from her family members.

Aha, that explains it! I looked up Brown Horse Artillery to find out if it was a nickname and didn't get any hits! Google falling down on the job.

The AW Rowe in Marshall's is first listed as a sergeant in company D and then was promoted to 2nd lieut of company E. Sounds like they took losses and combined companies.

I was dismayed at the number of Alex W. Rowe's I came across. I think the pension record for Wilson county TN is for the Alex Rowe in the 9th Tennessee Cavalry. Allie where did you find the info on Marshall's Battery?

The info on Marshall's is from fold3. The pension record is for Sterling's heavy artillery, not for the cavalry captain, and the records seem to be saying your Alex was promoted out of Marshall's altogether into Sterling's as a 1st lieutenant.

Yep, definitely confusing that both the artillery and the cavalry Alex are from Wilson co. Wish I could get to the whole record and see who it was filed on behalf of.

Edit: actually I think AW heavy artillery is yet a third unrelated one. Enlistment date is different from Marshall's Alex.

Here's the relevant stuff that is definitely under the only Rowe in Marshall's.
